Enabling Inspection Scoring

Prev Next

Scoring is a powerful feature in the Inspections & Audits module that helps you turn inspection checklists into measurable insights. When scoring is enabled on an inspection template, each response contributes to a section score and an overall inspection score — making it easier to compare performance across teams, sites, or time.

Enabling Scoring

To get started, go to the template settings and check the "Scores enabled" option. Once enabled, a Score settings panel will appear on the right side of your screen.

How Scores Are Defined

Each response type (e.g., Yes/No/N/A, Pass/Fail/N/A) can be configured with numerical values:

  • High values indicate positive outcomes (e.g., Yes = 1, Pass = 1)

  • Low values indicate negative outcomes (e.g., No = 0, Fail = 0)

  • Blank values (e.g., N/A = empty) are ignored in scoring calculations

This allows you to customize how responses impact the score — for example, ensuring that N/A doesn’t affect the total score, while "Yes" boosts it.

How Scores Are Calculated

Each question is scored and rolled up to create a section score:

Score Earned / Total Possible Score

For example, in a section with 5 questions:

  • If the inspector answers 4 with “Yes” and 1 with “No,” the score would be 4 / 5 = 80%

  • If the inspector answers 4 with “Yes” and 1 with “N/A,” the score would be 4 / 4 = 100% (N/A is excluded from the denominator)

Weighted Sections

In some inspections, certain areas may be more critical than others (e.g., electrical safety vs. signage). For these cases, you can assign weights to individual sections.

To configure weights:

  1. Click Configure section weights in the right sidebar

  2. Enter a percentage (0.00 – 100.00) for each section

  3. Ensure the total across all sections adds up to 100

The overall inspection score will now be a weighted average based on section importance.

For example:

  • PPE (weight 20%) scores 100%

  • Chemical Safety (weight 40%) scores 50%

  • Fire Safety (weight 40%) scores 75%

Final inspection score =
(100 × 0.2) + (50 × 0.4) + (75 × 0.4) =
70%

This approach gives you better control over how different areas impact the total result, aligning inspections more closely with your operational priorities.

Why Use Scoring?

Scoring provides significant value by enabling you to:

  • Compare performance across different sites or inspection teams

  • Identify trends in inspection effectiveness

  • Drive accountability by quantifying compliance and safety

✅ Best Practices

  • Phrase questions so that a positive response contributes positively (e.g., Yes is good)

  • Use N/A scoring selectively for questions that don’t apply in every scenario

  • Enable scoring for routine or recurring inspections where measurement and comparison are valuable

  • Avoid scoring one-off, open-ended, or subjective responses
